How Much Does Medical Waste Collection Cost in Sydney?

In short: the cost of medical waste collection depends mostly on how much clinical waste and sharps you produce, which bins and containers you need, and how often they're collected. The biggest saving for most practices isn't a cheaper collector. It's keeping ordinary rubbish out of clinical bins, and choosing a bin size and schedule that match what you actually produce.

Every practice is different, so collectors price each setup individually. This guide explains what goes into that price, so you can compare quotes properly and avoid paying for more than you need.

What affects the price?

1. How much clinical waste you produce

Clinical waste is collected, transported and treated at a licensed facility, and treatment is charged on the bins and the weight that arrive there. The more clinical waste you produce, the more it costs. That's why sorting waste correctly matters so much (more on that below).

2. The type and size of containers

Most practices need a mix of:

  • sharps containers for needles, syringes, blades and lancets
  • small clinical waste bins for treatment rooms
  • clinical waste wheelie bins (commonly 240 L, with larger sizes for high-volume sites)
  • biohazard bags to line bins

A single-chair dental practice might only need a few sharps containers and a small bin. A multi-room medical centre will usually need wheelie bins. A good collector recommends the setup after looking at what you produce, rather than selling you the biggest bin.

3. How often it's collected

Common schedules are daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, or on call when you need a pickup. More frequent collections cost more overall, but collecting too rarely means overfilled bins, which is a safety and compliance problem. The right frequency is the one that keeps bins below their fill lines.

4. Supplies

Sharps containers, bin liners and replacement bins are a cost in their own right. Ask whether supplies are included in the collection price or charged separately, so you're comparing like with like.

5. Location and access

Where you are, how easy the bins are to reach (ground floor, lift, loading dock, parking) and how many sites you have all affect the time a collection takes, and with it the price.

How to keep the cost down

  • Keep general waste out of clinical bins. Paper towels, packaging, glove boxes and clean gloves don't belong in clinical waste. They add weight and cost without adding risk. See our guide: What goes in a clinical waste bin?
  • Right-size your bins. A bin that's always half empty at collection means you're paying for space you don't use. A smaller bin, or a less frequent schedule, may suit you better.
  • Match the schedule to your output. If bins are rarely more than half full at collection, ask whether a longer gap between pickups is safe for your practice.
  • Use the right sharps container size. Containers should be closed at the fill line, so a container that's too large for your usage can sit open for too long.
  • Bundle services. If your cleaner and your waste collector are separate companies, ask whether one supplier can do both. It means one contact, one schedule and one invoice.

What to check when comparing quotes

  1. Licence: clinical waste must be carried by a transporter licensed by the NSW EPA. Ask for the licence.
  2. Where the waste goes: it must be taken to a licensed treatment facility.
  3. What's included: collections, bin hire, supplies, and any extra fees for on-call pickups.
  4. Contract terms: look for flexibility. Some providers lock you in for years.
  5. Who your contact is: a named person you can call makes a real difference when you need an extra pickup.

How M&I prices medical waste collection

We look at your practice first: what you produce, where the bins will sit and how often you need collections. Then we recommend a setup and send a clear proposal. We supply sharps containers, small clinical bins, wheelie bins and biohazard bags, and collect daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or on call, under our NSW EPA licence, with no lock-in contracts. Because we also clean dental and medical practices, many clients use us for both.

Frequently asked questions

Is medical waste collection charged per bin or per kilogram?

It depends on the provider. Treatment facilities charge on the bins and weight they receive, so most collection prices reflect both. Ask each provider how their price is worked out, so you can compare quotes fairly.

Are sharps containers and bags included in the price?

It varies between providers, so always ask. At M&I, supplies are priced separately from collections, so you only pay for what you use.

Do I need a collection contract?

Not necessarily. Some collectors offer on-call pickups and month-to-month arrangements with no lock-in contract.
